Qualifying Life Event (QLE)
A qualifying life event (QLE) is a significant change in an individual’s life circumstances that allows them to make changes to their benefits outside of the usual enrollment period.
Examples of qualifying life events include marriage, divorce, the birth or adoption of a child, changes in employment status (such as job loss or a change in work hours), or a change in residence.
When a QLE occurs, employees may be allowed to update their health insurance plans, adjust dependent coverage, or enroll in benefits programs that were previously unavailable to them. These events are typically regulated by laws such as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and employee benefits policies.
