At-Will Employment

At-will employment is an employment arrangement in which either the employer or the employee can terminate the working relationship at any time, for any lawful reason, or even without reason, without incurring legal liability.

In at-will employment, employers are not required to give advance notice or a reason when ending an employee’s position, and similarly, employees can resign without notice or cause.

This arrangement is common in the United States, though there are exceptions where terminations cannot violate laws, such as those prohibiting discrimination, or breach an employment contract or public policy.
