Form 1099 is a tax form used to report income earned by individuals who are not employees, such as independent contractors, freelancers, or other non-employee service providers. The 1099-MISC form specifically reports miscellaneous income, such as payments for services, rents, or prizes. If a business pays an independent contractor $600 or more during a year, it is required to file a Form 1099-MISC to report that income to the IRS and provide a copy to the recipient. The form helps the IRS track income for tax purposes and ensures that independent contractors pay taxes on their earnings.
